What does one do in this profession?

Cooks are responsible for all tasks related to the preparation of food. After creating a menu plan, they purchase and prepare ingredients, or store them appropriately. They organize work processes in the kitchen and ensure that the dishes are prepared on time and in the correct order.

In smaller kitchens, cooks prepare, cook, bake and garnish all dishes themselves. In larger kitchens, they are often specialized in the preparation of certain dishes, such as side dishes, salads, or fish and meat dishes. It is also their responsibility to calculate prices and provide advice to guests.

Requirements

  • Organizational skills, teamwork (e.g. coordinating work processes in the kitchen, assigning and supervising staff)
  • Attention to detail and sense of responsibility (e.g. working hygienically in the kitchen, complying with food safety regulations)
  • Dexterity and good physical condition (e.g. butchering and filleting meat or fish, standing for long periods of time)
  • Creativity (e.g. creating and assembling dishes, garnishing)
